How exciting to start this journey with you!
Today I want to start with the most common question of all! WHY IS MY SKIN SO OILY?
Oh goodness, how I love explaining this to my clients because it’s so easy to fix! Let me start by explaining ‘why’ before I get to ‘how’.
Skincare in Barbados is slightly different being that we deal with higher temperatures and mostly a higher humidity. Most people experience oily skin or have large pores, and the reason is simple. Over-cleansing.
We think that because we shower often due to the heat, we must cleanse often, but that’s far from the truth. Our skin on our face is different to that on our bodies. It is always exposed to the harshness of our environment, especially the sun. The sun is what compromises our skin causing it to be more sensitive than those who live overseas with not as much sun exposure.
THINK about it, everything happens at night when you sleep; your skin rejuvenates, replenishes and restores. So why use a cleanser on a morning? Nothing happened the night before that would cause the skin to be “dirty”. The only thing present on the skin are natural oils. By using a cleanser constantly, the body tries its best to replenish its natural moisture by opening the pores larger and larger to increase the production of natural oils. Cleansing on a morning not only opens the pores, it invites impurities like dirt, debris and environmental pollutants to have easier access into the skin during the day causing more harm than good. What should be done instead is to use our Balancing Facial Toner in the morning.
Why do I need a Balancing Toner? It does nothing.
The reason for a toner in your skin care routine is to balance the pH of your skin. That is, how oily or how dry your skin is. A toner is very essential. But not all toners are the same. With our high humidity the best toner is without any alcohol as that dries out the skin. A toner can be used up to three times daily, not like a cleanser that should be used at night only.
But I work out on a morning. I am sweaty and dirty.
A very common myth that your face is ‘dirty’. Sweaty, yes. If you are using the correct products and doing a professional exfoliation like the Diamond Microdermabrasion or chemical peels, you will know that when you simply splash your face with water several times and then use your toner, there is absolutely no need for a cleanser. People think they are cleaning by using a cleanser but actually it increases the oil production in the face. The same “dirt” can be removed by using a toner with a cotton pad.
Last but not least, always, always wear a UVA/UVB broad spectrum sunscreen (with a minimum of 7% zinc oxide) DAILY!
